Interview: Scott, Owner/Designer DUDE Unlimited

I got the chance a few short weeks ago to meet with Scott, designer/owner of Dude Unlimited, a line of stylish and body conscious men’s underwear and swimwear. Manufactured right around the Motor City, these pieces are more Golden Sands than Gold Coast (hahah, little Detroit inside joke!)

 

Hudson: How did you get started?

Scott: My business stems off a family graphics/banner business and t-shirt line. It has just evolved from there…

 

Hudson: Where do you get your inspiration?

Scott: From everyday life, from the cover of the new Madonna CD to a jacket I see at the mall. Most trends are leaning towards the 80’s revival, with bright colors, metallics and skin baring looks. I also work with some of our signature screen printed butt looks, like the popular “Pool Boy” pair.

 

Hudson: What are they made of and how?

Scott: All the gear is made of a variety of Nylon/Lycra blends, they keep their shape well and accent the body shapes well. All the pairs are hand made outside Detroit, MI. We are using some of the same techniques the big guys are, with screen printed waistbands and tagging.

Men’s Underwear: a 10,000-Year Tradition

Men’s underwear ain’t new. (I men the fashion of wearing it; a lot of men’s underwear is new and new styles are being developed all the time.) The first men’s undies of which we have archeological evidence are leather loincloths that had a waistband and a strip of material running from front to back.  We’re not sure who first invented men’s underwear, but we do know its been around a very long time.

Why was it first created? We don’t know the motivation behind the creation of male undergarments but there are a few logical reasons that simply make sense.

One reason male undies might have been invented had to do with the need to protect the all-important and sensitive genital and buttock regions. It makes sense that as long as the human species has been on this earth, that the male members would want to keep their members secure and in place. I mean who wants to be flopping around when you’re running down game, heading into battle or trying to catch the guy who just stole your Woolly Mammoth steak? Especially if a sharp object is involved. I mean one slip and there you have it, the first circumcision.

Another reason would be warmth. I mean keeping those family jewels out of the cold is a matter of comfort. Underwear would help keep them close to the body and, thus, warm and toasty.

Another purpose that male underwear serves is it helps keep outer garments clean. A guy wouldn’t want any unruly smells, ugly stains or excessive moisture on whatever could be seen in public. I mean talk about a chick or cock turnoff?

Finally, I’m thinking that, like today, men started wearing underwear because it made them more desirable: sexy, trendy and cultured. At least as sexy, trendy and cultured a guy could look 10,000 years ago. I mean, those guys were concerned with making sure they weren’t going to be eaten by a tiger or bear. Still, when a man and his partner got into the boudoir, in front of the warm, cozy fire or simply found a hole or cave where they could get it on, before they did get in on, then chances are they pad to get that alluring loincloth off.

People have always been people. And male underwear has been a mainstay for a long, long time.

 

I Like “Timoteo,” do You Like “Timoteo?” Part Two

Last week, I took a look at the Timoteo Classic line of men’s underwear. I said that the company’s Classic men’s underwear “is unencumbered, sleek, simple, smooth and masculine. There’s a manly elegance to it and yet it’s streamlined nature enhances a guy’s rugged look (if he already looks rugged).”  That’s the Classic look.

What about the Quake? What’s shakin’ with that line? Does it quake like California, the state where Timoteo is located? Or is it a coldly, silent style of men’s underwear that simply sits there?

The Quake comes in bolder colors that are more vibrant than the Classic line. The tones range from pink through yellow and all items in this line offer trim in contrasting colors. The trim is a nice touch.

The waistband is three-toned and the company logo is presented as a two-color band with the colors splitting the logo on the diagonal.  This is a nice touch that gives the illusion or feel of a “quak.” Also, the Timeoto logo appears in bolder, larger letters than it does in the Classic.

What’s the same? Well, like the Classic underwear, Timeoto’s Quake men’s undies come in a super low brief, jock and boxer brief. These are all hip-hugging, muscle-defining items. One note guys: Timoteo men’s underwear sizes have a reputation for running a bit small so if you take a medium, you may need a large in this brand.

Are these men’s undies—briefs, boxer briefs and jockstraps—quaking? I think put on the right body, they’re going to make your partner quake. Yes, indeed, big time.

The men’s underwear line by Dolce & Gabbana for winter 2010 is out as the Italian company presents 15 different items that are sleek, streamlined and formfitting. I love the look of Dolce & Gabbana's men’s underwear.

Stylish, sophisticated brief

The company offers a brief that has a dress-look feel to it. In other words, if I’m wearing a suit, then I’m wearing this brief. It’s that simple. The brief, which is 90% cotton and 10% Elastane, has an elastic waist and partially lined interior. It’s available in white, blue and red.

The brief has solid, color-contrasting defining trim around the bottom of each leg. The waistband is colorfully embroidered with the D&G logo and the word “underwear” appears on the right side of the waistband. The word is slanted across the width of the band. Each time the word appears, only part of it can be seen. This is a simple touch that gives this brief a refined, distinctive look. The contrast between the horizontal line of the waistband and the diagonal line of the word “underwear” is a unique touch that catches the eye.

I Like “Timoteo,” do You Like “Timoteo?”

Okay, the headline may be a lame reference to the George and Ira Gershwin song “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” from the 1937 movie Shall We Dance with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers where they sing “You like /təˈmeɪtoʊz/ and I like /təˈmɑːtoʊz/," but the question is real. Timoteo, whose company is based in La-la-land, is a men’s fashion designer whose creations include jeans, tops, swimwear, underwear and accessories. He started by designing women’s wear and eventually created his own line of men’s wear. He’s so into his English bulldog, Jackie, that he’s created designs inspired by his dog, including a line of Jackie Bulldog Tees and accessories. His swimwear is partly influenced by Timoteo’s love of surfing and beach volleyball.

Timoteo has created two types of men’s underwear: the Classic and Quake looks. One thing can be said about Timoteo’s underwear collections is that both are revealing in the manner in which they are cut low, hug the hip and highlight the package with a form-fit. Let’s take a look at the Classic line.

His Classic Underwear line offers low briefs and boxer briefs. The low briefs come in solid colors of white, red, orange, yellow, black and white/grey. Each has a wide waistband with the Timoteo logo across the front and back. They are available in small, medium, large and extra large. The low brief is made from spandex (96%) and cotton (4%), providing a fine fit that highlights the male form.

The boxer brief still has the low rise, hip hugging fit that the brief offers. It gives much more coverage along the hips, legs and butt. It’s definitely defining, presenting your package in a clear and present manner. The boxer brief lists for $29, while the low-rise brief is $19.

Men’s Underwear a Boost in More Ways Than One?

So, is it true, what some manufactures of men’s underwear claim and some psychologists say, that if an man’s comfortable in what’s next to the most intimate parts of his skin, he’s more comfortable with himself? And, if that underwear gives him a boost in the private parts, does it give him confidence that extends into the rest of his life?

There’s underwear that slims, underwear that enhances, underwear that adds bulk and underwear that can tweak your personality—but does it, in the end, create a new you, build you up and make you brimming with vim and vigor? Or does it set you up for a big crash?

One article I found on the Net (which did not list the author) claimed that, “There is no doubt that slimming underwear does help flatten out a protruding tummy. Not only does it have a physical change on the body, it also has a psychological effect: men just feel more confident. Their heads are higher and their backs are straighter. If there is a formal occasion to attend, guys should definitely get the type of body shapewear that will make them look good in a tuxedo.”

And although the observations of the writer in the above article may be true, there’s no evidence, data, offered to back up the opinions concerning the positive effect of “slimming underwear” for men. In fact, if you wear slimming underwear long enough, you’re not going to feel confident, you’re going to feel sore and tired from tightly enclosing all that flab for so long.

That may be the secret to confidence when it comes to the men’s underwear in which you chose to exhibit your body.

This site doesn’t try to carry a vast array of one brand, rather they’re highlighting some of the more interesting, cutting edge, innovative brands.
