Apparently the recent David Beckham underwear photos have sparked an increase in mens underwear sales for more than just Emporio Armani, the company whose briefs he sports in the revealing photos.
A recent news story from Australia quotes representatives of DT Clothing, Bonds, and Obviously as crediting the Beckham and other photos of celebrities wearing briefs for boosting the sale of mens briefs and bringing briefs back into vogue in the men's underwear world.
David Tomkinson of DT Clothing is noted as saying that sales of their line have increased at least 15 percent since the release of the Beckham photos. According to the story, Tomkinson says that the combination of skinny jeans, tight trousers and Beckham in tight briefs has attributed to a significant decline in the sale of boxer shorts. Quoted a news.com.au, Tomkinson says, “You can’t wear boxers under skinny jeans unless you want to look like you’re wearing a nappy underneath,” and further discussing boxers, "They aren’t really cool when it comes to fashion - they’re more for sleeping in or hanging around the house.” Ultimately he says that Australian guys have shied away from closer-fitting underwear until now because it contradicted the “whole macho guy image” but that that Beckham photos have begun to change that view.
Chris Miles with the Bonds underwear company notes a recent increase in sales of their Guy Front Trunk, but he credits that increase to recent underwear photos of former Australian tennis star Pat Rafter. Miles notes that more men are buying their own underwear these days, and so they're paying attention to what's going on in the marketplace to help them make their choices
The article also quotes Daniel Miljkovic, who is the designer of Obviously for Men Anatomical underwear -- we reviewed their underwear with high marks a while ago. Miljkovic notes that it is important for tight underwear to give men "room to move", noting that the Obviously brand underwear is more revealing because "based on the feedback we’ve had from retailers and customers, (men are) looking for more low-rise and risque underwear. He notes, "Five years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to get away with a shot like the Beckham shot, but that smaller, tighter-fitting design, which shows more of the package, is becoming more accepted.”
